The Belarusian Orthodox Church (BOC) takes a leading position in the country’s religious life. Over the past 15 years the number of the Orthodox parishes (religious communities) has been steadily growing. Within this period their number has increased almost four times to the total of 1,399. At present the Belarusian Orthodox Church unites 12 religious associations (the Belarusian Exarchate and 11 eparchies), five theology schools, 28 monasteries, 13 brotherhoods and nine sisterhoods. The eparchies have 1,175 religious buildings. Clergymen are trained in five BOC educational establishments: Minsk Ecclesiastical Academy, Minsk School of Theology in Zhirovichi of the Slonim region in the Grodno oblast, a religious school of the Vitebsk eparchy, Minsk Religious School of the Minsk eparchy and Slonim Religious School of the Novogrudok eparchy.
The Roman-Catholic Church (RCC) has been consolidating its positions in Belarus as well. The state and the RCC have established constructive relations. About 14% of the Belarusians are Catholics.
The RCC unites five religious organisations, two schools of theology, eight monasteries, nine religious missions and 440 religious communities. The RCC has 435 churches; 45 are under construction. In 1998-2006 the state handed over 295 facilities to the RCC for religious purposes. The supply of the Roman-Catholic Church with buildings for religious purposes makes up 89% and is the highest among other confessions in Belarus. There are 381 catholic clergymen, 190 of them are foreign citizens (predominantly from the Republic of Poland). The clergymen are trained in the Grodno and Pinsk seminaries.
Protestant confession came to Belarus in the 16th century. Nowadays there are 985 religious communities, 21 associations, 22 missions and five seminaries representing 14 Protestant confessions.
There are 27 Lutheran communities and three associations. They are the Independent Evangelic-Lutheran Church in the Republic of Belarus (ten communities), Union of Evangelic-Lutheran Communities in the Republic of Belarus (six communities), Evangelic-Lutheran Church in the Republic of Belarus (five communities). The vast majority of Lutherans are ethnic Germans. This fact allows to classify the Lutherans as an ethnic-confessional group. As a rule, Protestant communities are not very numerous (20 to 25 people). According to polls, about 2% of believers in Belarus call themselves Protestants. The most numerous confessions are Evangelical Christians (493 communities), Evangelical Christian Baptists (267 communities), Seventh Day Adventists (74 communities), New Testament Christians (54 communities), Jehovah's Witnesses (24 communities), New Apostolic Church (21 communities).
